This is one of the two churches overlooking the distinctive Piazza San Martino. The Church of Saints Marco and Martino was rebuilt at the beginning of the sixteenth century, and finished in 1512. From a list of the possessions dated 1684, it has been found that the Church assumed the title of Provostship of Saints Martino and Marco.
From a notice written by Quintilio Catalini and dated 1613, it is possible to take into consideration that a lion, emblem of St Mark the Evangelist, was added to the original crest representing the community of Petriolo. This happened during the transfer of the provostal title, till the next new double dedication of the mother church of the Castle.
During the second half of the eighteenth century, the present building was built, covering a wider area than before. The beautiful and ample canvas located in the main altar depicts St Martino and St Marco; in the background, the village: the last well-executed artwork by Luigi Fontana (he completed this painting at the age of 81, when he was almost blind).
